Have you ever noticed that Spanish, French, Italian or Portuguese sound a bit… similar? 🤔 That’s because they all belong to the same family: Romance languages ❤️ In this blog, you’ll discover where they come from, why they are called ‘Romance’, how Arabic influenced them and… which one is the hardest 😅
Let’s dive in!

🏛️What are Romance languages and why are they called that?
First things first: they have nothing to do with romance or love stories (sorry! 💔).
The word Romance comes from the Latin expression romanice loqui, which means 👉 ‘to speak in the Roman way’. These languages all come from Latin, the language spoken in the Roman Empire 🏛️. When the empire fell, Latin didn’t disappear… it simply evolved differently in each region:
🇪🇸 in Spain → Spanish
🇫🇷 in France → French
🇮🇹 in Italy → Italian
🇵🇹 in Portugal → Portuguese
🇷🇴 in Romania → Romanian
💡 Over time, these varieties became completely new languages!
🌍 How are they different from English?
English is a Germanic language, while Spanish, French or Italian come from Latin… and that creates some key differences! 🤯
🔊 Pronunciation
In most Romance languages, pronunciation is more consistent because each letter usually has one clear sound 🫡. That happens in Spanish, although a letter can sometimes have two possible sounds depending on the vowel that follows:
ce / ci → pronounced like /θ/ or /s/
ca / co / cu → pronounced like /k/
This makes reading much more predictable compared to English, where the same letters can sound completely different 😅.
⚙️ Gender and grammar
Romance languages are more structured, but also more complex. They use:
👉gender (masculine and feminine nouns) → el libro / la mesa
👉verb conjugations that change depending on the subject → yo hablo, tú hablas, él habla, nosotros hablamos, vosotros habláis, ellos hablan. You can often omit the subject pronoun 👉 hablo español (no need to say yo). In English, things are simpler: I speak, you speak, he speaks, we speak, you speak, they speak 🙂↕️.
⚠️ False friends
Although English shares some similar vocabulary (animal, hospital, important), there are also some very dangerous false friends… 👉 actualmente ≠ actually (it means ‘currently’). And here come the funny (and risky!) ones:
👉 embarazada ≠ embarrassed 👶🏻 That actually means: ‘I’m pregnant’
👉 constipada ≠ constipated 🤧 In Spain, constipada means ‘I have a cold’
💡 So be careful… one wrong word and you might say something VERY different! 😂

🕌 The Arabic influence (especially in Spanish!)
Here’s where it gets really interesting… 😍 Between the years 711 and 1492, much of Spain was under Muslim rule (Al-Andalus). This left a HUGE impact on the Spanish language.
📚 Thousands of Spanish words come from Arabic, and many of them start with al-! These are words that are super familiar to Spanish speakers and, once you know this, you’ll hear them everywhere! 😱 Some of the most common Arabic words starting with al- include:
😴almohada → pillow
🕌 alcázar → palace
🍲almuerzo → lunch
🍻alcohol → alcohol
🪡alfiler → pin
🛏️ alcoba → bedroom
💡 Fun fact: ojalá comes from the Arabic inshalla (إِنْ شَاءَ ٱللَّٰهُ) and means ‘hopefully’ or ‘if God wills it’. So, when you say ojalá, you’re actually expressing a wish that comes from Arabic culture!
🔊Pronunciation differences between Romance languages
Even though they share the same roots, they sound very different 👂
Spanish: Very phonetic, you read what you see, clear vowels → hola, mesa, pelo..., exactly as it looks🌞.
Italian: Similar to Spanish but more musical and expressive 🎶, lots of double consonants! → pizza, bella... 🍕.
French: Known for silent letters and nasal sounds 🤐 → beaucoup, pronounced ‘boku’; pain, nasal ‘a’ sound 🥖.
Portuguese: Similar to Spanish but with more nasal vowels → não, pronounced differently than in Spanish 🌀.
Romanian: Influenced by Slavic languages, with a unique sound compared to other Romance languages → măr – apple 🍏.

🤯 Which is the hardest Romance language?
Good question… and the answer is: it depends! But for English speakers 🇬🇧:
🟢 easiest → Spanish
• phonetic pronunciation• clear structure
• widely spoken
🟡 medium → Italian / Portuguese
• similar vocabulary
• pronunciation can be trickier (especially Portuguese)
🔴 hardest → French / Romanian
• French → difficult pronunciation + silent letters
• Romanian → very different + extra grammar features
💡 So if you’re starting your journey… Spanish is often the best choice 😉
